Boeing has released a video suggesting that the CH-47 Chinook helicopter could receive a new future capability allowing it to launch a drone swarm from the aircraft.
The clip, later shared on its official social media channels, was first presented by Boeing Defense during the Army Aviation Combat Summit of the U.S. Army Aviation Association in Nashville, Tennessee, last Wednesday (15), according to The War Zone.
The video, generated using computer graphics, provides interesting insight into the company’s future plans for the aircraft, including a capability that would allow drone swarms to be launched from the helicopter in flight. These could include reconnaissance drones, strike drones, electronic warfare (EW) drones, kamikazes, or decoys.
Boeing confirmed that these capabilities have not yet been tested from the helicopter, but the company is working toward that goal.
Kathleen Jolivette, vice president and general manager of Boeing’s Vertical Lift division, said the company is investing its own funds into the initiative and is currently assessing how quickly it could move into the demonstration phase, based on interest from both the U.S. Army and international forces.
For now, Jolivette said Boeing is “waiting to see what happens” with the Army’s ideal manned/unmanned vision. “I think there’s more to come on that,” she added.
